Liver Function Blood Test: Comprehensive Assessment for Hepatic Health
Liver function tests, or LFTs, are blood tests that measure chemicals in the blood that are associated with the liver. They can give an indication of whether there is a change in the way the liver is working and can therefore help to identify any problems.
A liver function test is an important component of our patient health screens. Your doctor may recommend a health screen to investigate potential reasons why you are not feeling yourself. Do not worry about determining for yourself which, if any, blood test you need. This is something that your doctor will be able to determine and explain during your consultation.
How Many Attempts to Collect the Blood Sample?
- Please take note of the following in our Phlebotomy policy, Each staff member is permitted only two attempts to collect a blood sample from a patient.
- However, if a patient’s veins are difficult to access, another phlebotomist may take over the collection, or the patient will be rebooked to be attended by our Senior Registered Manager, with the patient’s consent.
All our blood tests are available same day, with some of the fastest results in London. One of our doctors will take the time to explain to you what your test results mean and put in place any appropriate next steps based on those results.
We offer a same-day blood test result service for select tests (Monday – Friday, excluding Bank Holidays). A £ 35 fee for Phlebotomy + Courier charge will be applied for all Bloods. Please inform us at the time of booking if you require same-day results.

This is only a small sample of the many blood tests which provide. Our expert doctors can advise you during your consultation on the most appropriate tests for your condition.
* Please note that the lab results are estimates and can vary. Tests taken after 1 pm will be classified as the following day for timing purposes. You will receive a written analysis of your results within 1 working day of them being available from the laboratory. It is often possible for the doctor who reviews your results to be the same doctor who requested them. This is considered medical best practice, but it will add 1 working day to the timings. If you have multiple tests, then we shall wait to report on them together unless the first results highlight any reason for concern. Sometimes, the preliminary results will determine that additional tests need to be carried out on your sample. If this is the case, then your results will take longer. There is no additional charge for this service.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- What can a blood test for liver function show before symptoms show up?
A liver function test can find changes in liver enzymes and proteins before physical symptoms show up. This lets doctors deal with possible liver problems earlier and more easily.
- Is this test useful if I don’t drink alcohol?
Yes, for sure. Not just drinking alcohol can hurt your liver; medications, viral infections, obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver disease can all do the same thing.
- How do medications change the results of liver blood tests?
Some prescription drugs, supplements, and over-the-counter painkillers can be hard on the liver. A liver function test can help you find out if your liver is breaking down these substances properly.
- Can this test help keep an eye on long-term health problems?
Yes. Liver function tests are often used to keep an eye on chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, or ongoing treatments to make sure the liver stays healthy over time.
- Does an unusual result always mean liver disease?
No. Results can be affected by short-term things like being sick, dehydrated, exercising, or taking medicine. It may be suggested to do more tests or assessments before coming to a conclusion.
- How can this test help with planning your health and lifestyle?
Results can give you useful information about how your diet, weight, alcohol use, and general way of life are affecting your liver, which can help you make smart health choices.
- What happens next after I get my liver function results?
A healthcare professional should look over your results and explain what they mean, tell you if you need to look into them further, and suggest what to do next if necessary.
