Waiting for your first pregnancy scan can bring excitement and uncertainty. A private early pregnancy scan may offer an additional appointment before your routine NHS dating scan, but it is important to understand what each service provides.
This guide compares private pregnancy scans with NHS appointments, explains the limits of early ultrasound and helps you choose an appointment that suits your needs. Private scans complement your NHS maternity care; they do not replace it.
Understanding NHS pregnancy scans
In England, routine antenatal care includes an offer of two main ultrasound scans. NICE recommends:
- A dating scan between 11 weeks and 2 days and 14 weeks and 1 day: this helps establish how far along the pregnancy is and identify a multiple pregnancy. It can also form part of screening for certain chromosomal conditions if you choose to have that screening.
- An anomaly scan between 18 weeks and 0 days and 20 weeks and 6 days: this examines your baby’s anatomy and screens for certain physical conditions.
Additional NHS scans may be offered when clinically indicated, including earlier assessment for concerns in early pregnancy. You do not have to wait for your routine dating scan if you have symptoms that need medical attention.
What is a private early pregnancy scan?
A private early pregnancy scan is an additional ultrasound appointment that you book directly with a clinic. Depending on the stage of pregnancy and the views obtained, it may help identify the location of the pregnancy, assess whether cardiac activity is visible, estimate gestational age and identify a single or multiple pregnancy.
Some providers offer scans from around 6 weeks, but scanning very early can produce an inconclusive result. At Miracle Inside, we offer our Early Pregnancy Scan between 7 and 13 weeks. Please get in touch with us before booking if you are unsure of your dates or which appointment you need.
A scan may be performed over the abdomen or, when clinically appropriate and with consent, using a transvaginal probe. The available approach varies between providers, so confirm this when booking.
Private scans and NHS appointments: the main differences
How Do Routine NHS Pregnancy Scans Compare with Private Appointments?
Both NHS maternity services and private pregnancy scan clinics offer ultrasound examinations during pregnancy, but they serve different purposes and may provide different appointment experiences. Understanding these differences can help expectant parents make informed decisions about their pregnancy care.
Purpose of the Scan
**NHS pregnancy scans** form part of routine antenatal screening, assessment and maternity care. Additional investigations may be arranged when clinically necessary. In comparison, **private pregnancy scans** provide an additional appointment focused on the specific checks included in the chosen scan package, such as early pregnancy reassurance, viability, growth monitoring or other pregnancy assessments.
Timing and Availability
NHS pregnancy scans generally follow recommended antenatal screening windows, with earlier or additional examinations arranged according to clinical need. Private pregnancy scans may offer greater flexibility, including appointments before the routine NHS dating scan or between scheduled NHS examinations. However, availability depends on the clinic and the gestational age limits of the selected scan package.
Booking an Appointment
NHS ultrasound appointments are usually arranged through your NHS maternity service or early pregnancy assessment service. Private pregnancy scans can generally be booked directly with the clinic, subject to appointment availability. This may provide additional flexibility for parents who wish to arrange a scan at a particular stage of pregnancy.
Cost of Pregnancy Scans
Routine NHS pregnancy scans are provided as part of NHS maternity care, subject to NHS eligibility and charging rules. Private pregnancy scans are generally self-funded, and prices vary depending on the type of examination and services included. Before booking privately, it is advisable to confirm the total appointment cost and what the scan package includes.
Appointment Duration and Accompanying Guests
The length of an NHS ultrasound appointment depends on the examination being performed and local hospital arrangements. Guest policies may also vary between NHS maternity units. Similarly, private scan appointment durations and guest allowances depend on the selected package and individual clinic policies. Parents should confirm the expected appointment length and the number of accompanying adults or children permitted before attending.
Ultrasound Images and Additional Services
NHS hospitals may provide ultrasound photographs or other extras, although availability and any associated charges vary between hospitals. Private pregnancy scan packages may include printed ultrasound photographs, digital images or additional services, while some clinics charge separately for these features. Reviewing the package details beforehand helps ensure that parents understand what is included.
Are Private Pregnancy Scans More Accurate Than NHS Scans?
**Paying privately does not automatically mean that an ultrasound scan is more accurate or more comprehensive than an NHS examination.** The quality and scope of any pregnancy scan depend on several factors, including the purpose of the examination, the sonographer’s training and experience, the ultrasound equipment used and the stage of pregnancy.
It is also important to understand that a short reassurance scan is different from a detailed fetal anomaly examination. Each type of ultrasound has its own clinical purpose, and private reassurance scans should be regarded as additional to, rather than replacements for, recommended NHS antenatal screening and maternity care.
Paying privately does not automatically mean that a scan is more accurate or more comprehensive. The examination’s purpose, the sonographer’s training, the equipment and the stage of pregnancy all matter. A short reassurance scan is different from a detailed fetal anomaly examination.
When might you consider a private scan?
You may choose an additional private appointment if you:
- Would like an earlier assessment before your routine NHS dating scan.
- Are unsure of your pregnancy dates.
- Would value an opportunity to discuss what can be seen at your stage of pregnancy.
- Need an appointment time that fits around work or family commitments.
- Would like additional reassurance after a previous difficult pregnancy experience.
If you have had a previous ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or fertility treatment, ask your usual care team whether a particular monitoring plan is recommended. Follow any appointments and advice they provide.
What an early scan can and cannot tell you
An early scan describes what is visible at that appointment. It cannot guarantee that the pregnancy will continue normally or detect every health condition.
If the pregnancy is earlier than expected, a heartbeat or the pregnancy itself may not yet be visible. This does not always mean there is a problem. A repeat scan, blood tests or assessment by an early pregnancy service may be needed. The findings and your symptoms determine the next steps.
If the pregnancy cannot be located, appropriate follow-up is essential because an ectopic pregnancy has not been excluded. Your sonographer should explain the findings and any referral or follow-up advice.
Later services, such as gender scans and 3D or 4D imaging, have a different purpose and suitable gestational windows. They do not replace the NHS anomaly scan or other recommended antenatal screening.
What about pregnancy blood tests?
Blood tests may be appropriate for a specific clinical question. For example, a clinician may use repeat pregnancy hormone measurements alongside ultrasound when investigating an uncertain early pregnancy. A single hormone result cannot confirm that a pregnancy is healthy or located in the womb. Ask your clinician which tests, if any, are needed.
When to seek urgent medical advice
Contact your GP, maternity or early pregnancy service, or NHS 111 promptly if you have vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain or shoulder-tip pain in early pregnancy. Do not wait for a private reassurance appointment to investigate these symptoms.
Call 999 or attend A&E immediately for sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting or collapse, particularly if you feel very dizzy or unwell. These symptoms can indicate a serious complication, including a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
Choosing a pregnancy scan provider
Before booking, ask about:
- Qualifications and experience: who will perform the scan and their training in obstetric ultrasound.
- The examination: which checks are included, the suitable pregnancy stage and the scan method available.
- Results and follow-up: whether you receive a written report and what happens if findings are uncertain or concerning.
- The full price: any additional charges for images, multiple pregnancies or repeat appointments.
- Practical arrangements: appointment duration, preparation instructions and guest policy.

Frequently asked questions
What are the main differences between private pregnancy scans and NHS appointments?
NHS appointments provide routine antenatal care and screening, with additional scans when clinically needed. Private scans are additional, usually self-funded appointments that may offer a choice of timing and package. The checks included vary, so compare the examination itself as well as the appointment experience.
When should I book a private early pregnancy scan?
Choose an appointment within the clinic’s stated gestational window. Miracle Inside offers its Early Pregnancy Scan between 7 and 13 weeks. If your dates are uncertain, contact the clinic first. If you have pain or bleeding, seek medical advice rather than waiting for a routine private appointment.
Are private pregnancy scans medically reliable?
Ultrasound performed by an appropriately trained professional can provide useful information about the pregnancy. Reliability depends on the examination, gestational age and image quality. No scan can detect every condition or guarantee the future outcome of a pregnancy. Ask about the provider’s qualifications, reporting and referral arrangements.
Can an early pregnancy scan show my baby’s sex?
An early viability or dating scan is too early for reliable ultrasound assessment of your baby’s sex. Gender scans are offered later in pregnancy. Check the package’s minimum gestational age; the baby’s position may affect the result, and ultrasound assessment is not 100% certain.
Can I have private scans and continue NHS care?
Yes. You can book additional private scans while continuing your NHS maternity care. Attend all recommended NHS appointments and screening scans, and share any important findings or reports with your midwife or doctor.
Will a private scan appointment be longer or allow more guests?
This depends on the package and clinic policy. Private appointments are not automatically longer than NHS scans. Confirm the duration, guest allowance, included images and any additional charges before booking.
